Pneumonia occurs in up to 6 percent of reported measles cases and accounts for 60 percent of deaths from measles. Encephalitis can also occur. Other complications include middle ear infections and convulsions .

Persons who have not been immunized against measles are the main risk group. Infants are generally protected from measles for 6 to 8 months after birth, due to immunity that was passed on from their mom
